Zoos mission is "That the zoo is run to support and promote
conservation by breeding rare and endangered animals, by excellent
animal welfare, high public service, recreation, education
and science."
One of the many baby elephants to be born and raised at
Chester Zoo, following in the very large footsteps of Jubilee,
the first elephant to be sucessfully born and raised in this
country in 1977, one of Chester Zoos proudest moments.
Today
approaching half of the species in the zoo are endangered,
so that breeding programmers to ensure their survival are
vital.
The animals
that they help are not only the large and the exotic; amongst
the native British Species they support are the Sand Lizards,
Crayfish, Harvest Mice, Dormice and Barn Owls.

The Good
Britain Guide 2000 has selected Chester Zoo as the Cheshire
Family Attraction of the Year. The accolade in the directory
begins "this is the biggest zoo in Britain, and undoubtedly
one of the best, constantly developing and improving."
Chester is a very large zoo; in fact at present it is 'Britain's
biggest!' and the Zoo is constantly involved in many conservation
projects where it works with members of the International
Community. It concentrates on keeping animals that it knows
it can care for properly and by breeding them help to stop
them becoming extinct. The days when zoos held huge numbers
of animal species, rather like a 'stamp collection', have
now thankfully gone.
The
elephants clearly enjoy the waterfall, just one of the features
of Chester's innovative National Elephant Centre.
Today,
worthwhile breeding programmes are organised in co-operation
with other zoos and wildlife agencies in Britain, Europe and
elsewhere.
Chester
has had a number of major improvements, which have really
shown why the Zoo is one of the most highly respected and
acknowledged conservation centers in Europe. New exhibits
and features at the Zoo include the Penguin pool, the Zoofari
Monorail, the huge 'Europe on the Edge' aviary and the impressive
zoo entrance. With large enclosures for its animals, excellent
viewing areas for adults and an attractive garden setting,
Chester is a thoroughly modern zoo.
Among
the best exhibits are the Chimpanzee Islands which give the
monkeys both privacy and space and the Twilight Zone - a collection
of nocturnal animals including colonies of bats
The Zoo
was founded by George Mottershead, whose driving mission was
to create a zoo without any bars.
His dream
was eventually realised in 1930 , when he brought his family
to live in the Oakfield house and formed the original collection
of animals from an earlier zoo at Shavington near Crewe. His
proudest achievement was probably the successful rearing of
Jubilee, the first elephant to be born and raised in this
country in 1977.
