Cotswolds
Wildlife Park
otswold
Wildlife Park is home to over 200 species of animal and bird
life many of which are endangered or threatened in the wild.
Almost all the mammal species and most of the bird species
are captive bred, and many are part of captive breeding programmes
whereby zoological collections co-operate to increase captive
populations of various species.
Asiatic
Lions, just one of the animals involved in captive breeding
programmes at Cotswold Wildlife Park.
Some captive
breeding programmes are co-ordinated nationally, others at
European level and others at a worldwide level. Cotswold Wildlife
Park has been involved in many successful stud-book co-ordinated
captive breeding programmes, they have had particular success
with the following species:
- Asiatic
Lions
- Amur
Leopard
- Scimitar-Horned
Oryx
- Red
Panda
- Cotton-Topped
Tamarins
- Red-handed
Marmosets

The following
species are examples kept at the Park of rare or endangered
animals that have bred successfully at the Park, but where
the captive population is still too limited to justify a studbook
breeding programme. Therefore, the breeding potential of these
species is actively managed between private collectors and
zoos to build up the captive "safety net" population,
with the possibility of a formal co-ordinated breeding programme
being set up in the future:-
- Asian
Brown Tortoise
- Great
Indian Hornbill
- European
Black Stork
- Striated
Caracara
- Indian
Python
- Lar
Gibbon
- Eclectus
Parrot
The re-introduction
of captive-bred endangered species back to the wild is being
refined constantly, as scientists and conservationists try
to learn from their mistakes. It is an issue that has to be
thought about very carefully and while may be suitable for
some species is not for others.
Cotswold
Wildlife Park has been involved in the re-introduction to
the wild of Scimitar-Horned Oryx in North Africa.
The cases
when and where re-introductions are and are not possible is
a subject that will be discussed more widely within the intotheark
web site. However Cotswold Wildlife Park has been involved
in the re-introduction to the wild of Scimitar-Horned Oryx
in North Africa (formerly wiped out from their natural habitat
by over-hunting) and Cheer Pheasants in the highlands of Pakistan
(threatened by over-hunting in their natural habitat).
Cotswold
Wildlife Park is a member of the Federation of Zoological
Gardens of Great Britain and Ireland.
The Park
is set in 160 acres of parkland and gardens around a listed
Victorian Manor House. The wonderful gardens and its' setting
in the Cotswolds make it a wonderful place to visit. Plan
of the park.
The Park
is located 2 miles South of Burford, Oxfordshire, on the A361.
Burford is mid way between Oxford and Cheltenham on the A40
see map. For more information
about Cotswold Wildlife Park visit their web site at: www.cotswoldwildlifepark.co.uk
The Good
Britain Guide 2000 has chosen Cotswold Wildlife Park as the
Oxfordshire Family Attraction of the Year.
We would
like to extend our thanks to Cotswold Wildlife Park for all
of their help and support in making intotheark.com a reality.
