Edinburgh plays a significant role in conservation projects and participates in a number of international breeding programmes with 10 studbooks being kept by members of the Edinburgh staff. As well as the work in breeding programmes, all around the Zoo, you can see how the lives of the collection’s animals are being enriched. An award was received for the penguin cone feeder, which allows the penguins to feed on fish in the water, which encourages a more natural feeding behaviour.

Edinburgh have a variety of experiences to enjoy – the Discovery Centre is just one – a ‘hands on’ centre, giving school children and visitors the chance to find out about classification. What makes a bird fly? How is it different from a reptile? All of these questions and more can be answered in this exhibit.

The Arkadia shop is a great place to pick up those unique animal items, whilst the hilltop safari provides a whole new aspect to visiting the Zoo – see the animals in style!!

Always a favourite with the visitors, the Tiger, always alert, always watchful.

A trip to Edinburgh is rounded off nicely with a visit to one of a number of informative talks by the animal keepers who provide fascinating information about the animals they work with, giving around eight talks and displays daily. This your best chance to find out more about your favourite animal. Find out the fascinating truths of the breeding successes with the red panda, what makes a Rothchild’s giraffe different from other giraffes, why rhinos are so rare today – a truly wild experience!!
