BLACKPOOL ZOO REOPENS

Blackpool Zoo will once again open it's doors this weekend to the general public after being voluntarily closed for over three weeks due to the recent Foot & Mouth outbreak. Management and veterinary staff at the resort Animal Park have been monitoring the situation on a daily basis which has included ongoing dialogue with The Ministry of Agriculture Fisheries & Food (MAFF) and the Zoo's own national federation.
A decision has been made to open the doors at 10.00am Saturday 31st of March.

Some UK Zoo's have remained open throughout the crisis including London & South Lakes and as of today a total of 16 Zoo's are now welcoming visitors with a further 10 considering early reopenings.
MAFF have informed Blackpool Zoo that they are currently 'out with' an infected area and that zoo is only subject to control measures that apply to the whole country. To conform to these measures disinfectant mats and ramps will be in place at the car park and main entrance of the Zoo and visitors will be handed a safety leaflet outlining certain conditions. These include a no 'brought in' food policy, an animal feeding and contact ban and for anyone who has recently been in contact with farm animals to contact staff before entering.

Blackpool Zoo Manager Iain Valentine is very positive about the Zoo's reopening. 'We have had to instigate lengthy risk assessments and have taken expert advice before deciding to open. Most of the animals in Blackpool Zoo are not in the susceptible category. We can protect those that are at some remote risk by placing them in quarantine or isolated conditions. There will be some restrictions in place but I believe that our visitors will still enjoy what is becoming one of the UK's most popular animal parks' said Iain.
