Breeding Success at Woburn Safari Park

Seven mischievous Canadian timber wolf cubs are causing trouble in the reserves at Woburn Safari Park. There are two litters of cubs, three cubs belonging to Lola, the Safari Park's distinctive black wolf and the other four belonging to Dublin. Both female wolves came to the Bedfordshire Park last year from Dublin Zoo in order to bring new blood into the Woburn wolf pack.

The cubs are only eight weeks old - but are very lively and rangers are expecting to be kept on their toes watching the latest arrivals. They will certainly be providing a lot of entertainment for visitors to the Park. There are now 13 wolves in the pack.

Wolf packs have a rigid social structure, with a dominant alpha male and alpha female. Body language is very important for the wolf and they will use tail, head and ear movements as signals between members of the pack. The cubs will be learning all of this from the older wolves as they find their places in the strict pack heirarchy. Wolves lived wild in Britain until 1743 when the last one is believed to have been killed in Scotland.

The wolf is becoming extremely rare. Superstition and fairy tales have played a large part in the persecution of these shy animals - however, their bad press is somewhat unfair as no one is believed to have ever been killed by a wolf. In Europe and North America wolves are still shot despite legal protection. Habitat destruction with subsequent lack of prey has also contributed to their decline.
