Zoos Go Wild can offer REAL Eco-tours to visit and support conservation projects in South America.

The next tour will be to Ecuador in November 2002.

Tour Dates:
20th November to 5th December 2002

Tour Programme:

5 day Jungle tour (by canoe and on foot) to visit one of the few remaining remote jungle areas of Ecuador and the indigenous community that live there. The Payamino Community have been featured in an event at Aalborg zoo and this tour is just one of the ways that Aalborg zoo and Zoos Go Wild are trying to support them to keep their way of life and their forest. This tour will raise money for the community to pay for much needed medicines and school books and will provide a sustainable income for the community. You will be treated to a unique experience, that will give you a real taste of 'life in the jungle' as well as the jungle 'wildlife'. 
2 day Cloud forest tour. Again this tour will support the local community of Santa Lucia to protect their beautiful cloud forest reserve, whilst at the same time giving them a sustainable income. You will get the opportunity to experience another type of forest habitat and be stunned by the array of wild orchids, humming birds and other exotic wildlife that only inhabit this fragile ecosystem. The highlight of this tour will be an early morning trek to observe the breathtaking mating display of the "Cock of the rock".  The bright red males of this species get together at sunrise every day and perform a loud and vibrant show whilst battling it out for the females attentions.
1day boat trip through the mangrove coastal swamps of Northern Ecuador. Here you will experience yet another dramatic ecosystem - the mangroves hold host to remote island fishing communities, a staggering array of sea birds (similar to that of the Galapagos Islands) and beautiful beaches. Your trip here will support an important grassroots project to continue to build and protect habitat corridors in the area and work with local communities to find sustainable solutions for the future.
1 day visit to Otovalo Market - the most traditional and famous market in the highlands of South America. You will get chance to buy traditional handicrafts from all the communities we visit,  however your trip would not be complete without experiencing the hustle and bustle of a real market, it's also a great opportunity to stock up on Christmas presents!
The trip will also include a half day trip to the old city of Quito and can include an optional day trip up the volcano of Cotopaxi.

By the end of this 2 week adventure you will have had a taste of some of the most beautiful but threatened ecosystems and cultures of Ecuador and South America. You will have learnt about the threats, witnessed grass roots conservation in action and played your part in securing a sustainable future for the people and wildlife of the region.

Tour Guides: Nan Swannie and Jens Sigsgaard from Zoos Go Wild. All the tours are to conservation projects selected from the 42 that Nan and Jens visited during their 10 months in South America.

Tour Ethics and Approach: We aim to provide a truly "Eco-Tour". Many of the companies operating in South America use this term to attract tourists but it's only relevance to the tour is that it visits nature and includes some "eco"logy, but does nothing to actually protect nature.

We take the term more seriously and use it in its more holistic meaning. To us "Eco" means:

Eco - system - with us (trained biologists) and the conservation professionals actually working in the area, as guides, we make sure you get all the fascinating facts about the ecosystem.
Eco - logy - the tour will also illustrate the conservation threats and solutions at play in the area. You will get to see conservation in action and play an active role in it!
Eco - friendly - where ever possible we have tried to minimize our negative impacts on the environment and make your visit as sustainable as possible.
1) Transport will be as energy efficient as possible and will support local economies - whilst at the same time getting you quickly and safely to your next destination, via scenic routes. 
2) Food provided on the tour will be home-cooked by experienced and hygienic local cooks, from produce grown locally but which has not put a strain on the ecosystem. Menus will have a local flavour but are designed to accommodate European tastes and stomachs!
3) Accommodation provided will be clean and comfortable, but basic; having being constructed in harmony with their surroundings and where services do not place too greater pressure on the environment. 
Socio- Ecological - by only visiting projects that are run by local (often indigenous) people we ensure that the tour activities are sensitive to their culture, that the experience for you is genuine and that they truly benefit from your visit - both financially and culturally. With this type of trip sharing their culture with you actually gives it a new worth and helps them to keep it alive.
Eco - nomic - the costs of this trip have been kept to a minimum to protect your budget and the environment, but we have not skimped on our support of the projects - a percentage of your fee will automatically go to support the conservation work being carried out by the projects we visit in each area.

We aim to provide a unique and genuine experience that not only visits and explores local cultures and ecosystems but also supports and protects them.
