Zoos Go Wild
have just completed their first public zoo event
at Aalborg zoo.

Over $3800 was raised for a threatened indigenous Ecuadorian Amazon community.

Photo: 2 members of the community (the shaman and his wife) and their associated jungle guide came over to Denmark and took part in a 4 week event in the zoo.

They built a typical jungle house (in three days) made from materials bought directly from the community in February.  They then spent the rest of the time making other traditional items such as a canoe, baskets, bags, ceremonial hats, their traditional drink "chicha".

Visitors to the zoo were able to learn how they pan for gold, have a go at using a blow pipe, try the chicha and ask the Shaman about jungle life.

Hand made jungle bags, posters, jungle candles and chocolate were also on sale to visitors.

All money raised will go directly to the community to pay for school books, medicines and assistance in securing additional land titles which will protect their watershed from an invasion by a very persistent oil company.

This event will now be followed up with a 2 week eco-tour to the community and 2 other projects in Ecuador in November 2002.  Please contact us if you would like to come with us on this tour, there are still places available.
